Overview

Since forming in 1995, UXC Limited has been one of Australia’s true business success stories. Focusing their business activities on field solutions, business solutions and IP ventures, UXC has grown to be an ASX 300 company with 3500 employees and annual revenues of $700m. UXC made the decision to relocate their inner Canberra City office to new premises in Fyshwick, Canberra, ensuring that their infrastructure could support company growth and maintain the high level of service for which they are known.

“There were two main factors for the move. Firstly, the rate at which the business was expanding meant that our previous office didn’t provide us with the flexibility that we needed as a business.” stated Joe Coombs, Business Operations Manager for UXC in Canberra. He continued “secondly, our internal structure calls for a lot of communication and interactivity between the various sub groups which make up UXC. In moving to a new building we needed to ensure that the system cabling design would be compatible with our interaction requirements.”

The Installation

MRB Communication, an accredited Molex Certified Installer, were appointed to complete the project and installed a Molex PowerCat 6, category 6 solution, providing voice and data to 212 work area ports. There was a two week time frame to complete the project, so it was important that the installation ran very smoothly. MRB had a team of four working on the project to ensure that standards, such as correct bend radius, were maintained and once completed the network would test and meet the required performance to be accredited with the Molex system warranty.

“The actual installation was a very smooth and trouble free process, so being able to meet the project time frames and provide a well managed installation is very satisfying. From past experiences Molex has always proved very reliable with ease of installation and testing, making it an ideal choice for this project” stated Tony La Vella, Project Manger, MRB Communications Joe, added “relocating a business is always a difficult task. Thankfully from my point of view the installation was something I didn’t have to worry about. Aesthetically it looks great and I was impressed by how tidy the cable management was.”

The installation involved centralising all cables to one server room, supporting an open plan office space (four ports per desk), meeting rooms and pre-configured project areas, unpopulated, but ready should the company need to relocate various team members to work in a centralised area. Joe stated “the project zones were really part of the future planning that went into the infrastructure design. At times it is necessary for us, as a group, to pull resources from each business unit to set-up specific project teams. The zones enable us to create an office environment for these teams providing cross business functionality quickly.” He concluded “we’re looking at being here for five years, but at the rate we’re growing we would probably need to look into additional office space after one year. The flexible zones allow us to potentially use them as fixed office space, enabling us to simple move that functionality to another building, with no requirement to redesign or re-cable our infrastructure here.
